Travel tips: Packing made easy

Heading on holiday? Packing can be stressful, particularly if like me you have a tendency to overpack. Not to mention the struggle of getting it to all fit back in your suitcase for the return trip! Here are a few life hacks that I use to make packing that little bit easier.

Plan your wardrobe

Smart closetThis is the easiest way to avoid over or under packing. Instead of picking random items out of your wardrobe try to pack outfits instead. This will save you from feeling like you have nothing to wear when you get to where your going! To plan my outfits I like to use the Smart Closet app. Although it takes a while to upload your wardrobe it is so worth it to be able to browse your clothes directly from your phone. You can even create a packing list for your holiday so that when it comes to transferring clothes to suitcase you don’t miss anything!

Keep it organised

Packing cubesWant to maximise your space and keep everything organised, packing cubes are your friend! These are an essential if you are going to make multiple stops as it saves you having to unpack and repack as you can just leave everything in the cubes. You can get them in loads of different sizes and colours, personally I wanted something that looked a bit more stylish so shopped around and found these from Nordace. Not only do they look super cute but they are also compression cubes so they shrink down making them even more space efficient.

Accessorise with ease

f35dbb12-7b93-48e3-bfe5-20c658decb94One of my biggest bugbears when travelling is tangled jewellery. I used to spend hours de-tangling my necklaces but my Stackers jewellery box has been a major game changer! You can get a variety of sizes but I find the medium one is perfect for me. Not only does it keep everything organised for the journey, its also a great way to keep everything organised while you’re on your trip and minimise the chances of a misplaced necklace or a lost earring.

What do you use to make your life easier when it comes to holiday packing?

April favourites

It has been ages since I did a round up of things I’ve been enjoying for the month just gone (probably about 2 years actually…) so I thought now seemed as good a time as any! Here are a few things that I have been enjoying this month.

1. You’re dead to me

you're dead to me

I have my house mate to thank for this one. Usually I listen to a lot of news podcasts and since one particular story is dominating the news at the moment (you know that little thing beginning with c) I have been looking for some alternatives. You’re dead to me is a BBC sounds podcast hosted by Greg Jenner, a British author and public historian, about various historical figures and periods. He is joined by an expert on the topic of the week and a comedian, which makes for an entertaining and informative podcast. You can learn something new without it feeling like learning! If you’re looking for some other podcast picks you can read about my favourites here: Top Podcast Picks

2. All things green

0E2FA345-B00C-4ADA-887D-A61C3DFCAA43

Green is fast becoming my favourite colour. Pastel green is clearly a popular colour this spring which is probably part of the reason I find myself drawn to it but the other reason I love green is because it’s the colour of my plant children. I am definitely a crazy plant lady – I just can’t get enough, bedroom jungle here I come! There are loads of benefits to having house plants; they purify your air, looking after them is beneficial for your mental health and they add a nice pop of colour as well as creating a relaxing atmosphere. You can read more about my houseplant obsession here: Hello Houseplants

3. Animal Crossing

Animal Crossing

There is something surprisingly relaxing about spending your day fishing, catching bugs and collecting fruit in order to pay back your debt to a business savvy racoon. I had animal crossing years ago back when it was on Nintendo DS, and when I saw the new version I thought I would give it ago. Admittedly, this was not a cheap decision… but it was worth it! There is so much more to do in this version (besides paying off your house loan to Tom Nook) and I can see myself playing this for a long time to come. Given the current situation *cough, quarantine and social distancing, cough* I’m not doing much so this is an enjoyable way to fill the time. It also has the added benefit of being able to play with friends. So the more people I can convince to invest in this the better!

4. Yoga with Adriene

yoga with Adriene

One of my New Years resolutions was to do more yoga and I must confess until now I really haven’t been making an effort with this one. In an effort to force myself to do this I have started Yoga with Adriene’s 30 day home series. I was 4 days in and really enjoying having a proper structure to follow and hold myself accountable to – then I slipped a disk in my back so haven’t been able to do it more recently…

5. L’Oreal No Haircut Cream

LOreal-Elvive-Dream-Lengths-No-Haircut-Cream-200ml-750678

This one is a rediscovery rather than anything new. I forgot how much of a difference L’Oreal Elvive Dream Lengths No Haircut Cream makes to detangling wet hair. Especially now that I have blonde hair I’m making an extra effort to take care of the ends to try and avoid them getting dry. I used to use this back when my hair was longer and I was trying to grow it to minimise split ends but I forgot about it until I found it while doing a bit of a sort out. I won’t be forgetting about this again, that’s for sure.

What have you been loving recently?

Monthly must haves! Unsurprisingly there is a lot of clothing in this months haul…I’m a shopping addict what can I say!

Top tips: Working from home

1. Create a proper work space

2

While working from bed can seem tempting, it’s a sure fire way to end up with cabin fever. Creating a separate work space – ideally somewhere you can shut off once you’re done for the day – will help you get into work mode and help you separate it from your down time.

2. Get active on your lunch break

3

So there are two parts to this. Firstly always take your lunch break, its important to take regular breaks from staring at screens. Secondly it can be hard to motivate yourself to get active when at the end of the day the sofa is right there. Using your lunch break to go out for a walk or a run will not only give your eyes a well needed rest from screens but the fresh air will help improve productivity for the afternoon.

3. Use the time you would spend commuting doing something productive

4

If you aren’t used to working from home this one is particularly useful. Trying to keep to your usual routine as much as possible will make it easier to adjust to working from home (and also easier to adjust when you have to go back to the office). Read a book, go for a walk, do some yoga, clean your room – whatever you want! You’ll feel more awake and ready to start the day.

4. Set reminders to take regular breaks

5

It can be very easy to sit at your desk all day long which is bad for you in many ways. Set reminders on your phone or work computer every hour or so to remind you to get up and move. Do a lap of your house or have a quick stretch.

5. Keep connected

7

The biggest difference between working at home and working in an office is the people. It can be easy to feel isolated if you don’t make the effort to stay connected to your colleagues. Try to schedule at least one call a day with a colleague or friend.

6. Get dressed like you’re going to work

9

While it’s nice to be comfy and working in pj’s is very appealing, getting dressed will make you feel more productive and ready to work.

7. Have a clear end to your day

6

This is important as it is easy to work longer hours when there is a less clear end to your day. Having an end of day ritual will help with this. It could be going to make an afternoon snack or having a shower or even doing some exercise.

Top tips for gym newbies

It’s 2018! New year and time for New Years resolutions, here are my top tips for sticking to your “get healthy and go to the gym” resolution.

Skin Care Saviours

I am definitely guilty of being lazy when it comes to taking skin care seriously. However, in order to be a proper #adult I decided to start taking better care of it. But there is so much out there to choose from, there’s toners and lotions and potions galore, so to make life easier for you here are my go to products.

For everyday cleansing

Camomile cleansing butter

camomile-sumptuous-cleansing-butter-6-640x640
The Body Shop – Camomile Cleansing Butter – £11

I picked this one up because I was intrigued by the concept of a cleansing butter and after one use I was hooked.

It’s super easy to use, and it leaves my skin feeling really soft. Although, it isn’t the best at removing eye make up.

I really like cleansers that can be applied to a dry face as it speeds up the process. I am much less likely to properly clean my face if I have to wait for the tap to run warm before I even start the cleaning process.

Camomile make up remover

camomile-gentle-eye-make-up-remover-1088059-camomilegentleeyemake-upremover250ml-2-640x640
The Body Shop – Camomile Eye Make-up Remover – £7.50

When I picked up the cleansing butter I decided to try the eye make up remover as well and it did not disappoint.

I wasn’t sure if I would like this one but they sell a mini version of it as part of a gift set with the cleansing butter. Mini’s are a great way to try new products without spending loads of money. The number of times I have bought a product that has been super hyped up only to use it 3 times and forget about it.

When I finish my mini bottle I will definitely be going back for a big one!

Micellar water

3381835
Simple – Micellar Cleansing Water – £3.49

If I can’t be bothered to do a proper clean with the butter then I’ll use micellar water, I also have a mini version to take with me when I go on trips.

Micellar water is great for giving your skin a good cleanse when you haven’t got water to hand. I will tend to use this after using a make up wipe to try and get as clean as possible. Also because I often feel like wipes don’t take all the makeup off, using micellar water gets the last bits off.

For the super deep clean

Himalayan charcoal clay wash

himalayan-charcoal-purifying-clay-wash-2-640x640
The Body Shop – Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Clay Wash – £10

When I’m in the shower I’ll do a proper deep clean using this face wash.

I particularly like this one as it contains tea-tree which helps with break outs. It also doesn’t leave my skin feeling dry at all, which some deep cleansers do. It unclogs pores which I think is really important to properly get rid of all the pollution and grime your face picks up during the day.

And, as if that isn’t enough, it smells amazing!

Seaweed exfoliator

seaweed-pore-cleansing-exfoliator-7-640x640
The Body Shop – Seaweed Exfoliator – £11

Once I’ve cleansed its time to exfoliate. There’s just something about an exfoliator that leaves skin feeling super smooth that I just love.

I have sensitive skin so I need an exfoliator that isn’t too harsh and this one is perfect.

For the break outs

All things Tea-Tree

I use the Skin Clearing Clay Mask once a week, twice if I’m having a particularly bad skin week (Mother Nature I’m looking at you). Every night I use the Night Lotion on areas that are particularly prone to breaking out. I find if I use it all over it just makes the problem worse. Then to finish off I use the Targeted Spot Gel. Does what it says on the tin really, it reduces spots overnight. I’ll use this twice a day on spots until they disappear, which is normally one or two days.

So there you have it, the lazy girls guide to skin care. What are your go to skin care saviours?

Stepping into Spring trends

The start of the new season means that there are lots of new trends to try. Here is a round up of some of my favourites for Spring 2020…

White shirtYour favourite white shirt gets an upgrade

White shirts are versatile and easy to wear but they aren’t usually the focal point of your outfit. Until now. Spring 2020 sees the rise of the oversized white shirt, my personal favourite is this one from river island because it brings in the puff sleeve trend as well and I love the detailing on the sleeves.

Still easy to wear, and for those colder days wear it sticking out the bottom of a nice cozy jumper – or if you’re feeling brave (which I don’t think I am) you could wear with a sweater vest.

Screenshot 2020-02-27 at 23.10.24Bring on the brights

Brighter days means brighter outfits, and this year you don’t have to wait until summer to get out your neon gear.

If you aren’t keen on the walking highlighter vibe an easy way to do the neon trend is through your accessories. A pair of bright trainers will spice up any outfit! Want to go a bit bolder? Coordinate your top to your shoes. By having a different colour in the middle it means the colour isn’t too overpowering but it’s still a bright and fun outfit.

PNLUF_SQ4_0000000017_RED_MDdForget florals, today is all about Tiers

Florals for spring may be groundbreaking, but there are other ways to get a girly outfit vibe. Maybe you’re not quite ready to crack out the summer dresses, the tiered trend is a nice transition.

This Topshop dress is one of my favourites. The dark base colour makes this a great outfit for those grey-er spring days, but the ruffles give it a lighter feel. Also this is the perfect day to night dress. Dress down with some Dr Martens or dress it up with a pair of strappy heels.

12838202-3
Fabulous Faux Leather

And you thought leather way just for winter – how wrong we were! Leather looks get a spring makeover with thinner fabrics and brighter colours.

Faux leather ‘shackets’ are very of the moment, but I personally like a little bit more warmth and so this Asos jacket is a winner in my book. We all know that sunshine is far from guaranteed in spring so a good jacket is a must. One of the many advantages of faux leather is that it is waterproof as well as stylish.

14729186-1-blueDoll it up with dots and spots

After the rise of THAT Zara dress last summer it’s no surprise that everyones gone dotty for spots (pun 100% intended). Polka dots are big this season, particularly on dresses.

This Miss Selfridge mini dress is perfect for spring. Pastels, puff sleeves and polka dots – what’s not to love! Although perhaps one to crack out later in the season when the weather is a little bit warmer, paired with a denim jacket and some white trainers.

What trends are you loving for Spring 2020?

Ways to up your nail game

Anyone else like having their nails done but also not a fan of paying someone to do it for you? If my nails don’t have polish on I do not feel complete! Here are some of my top tips for getting the salon look from the comfort of your own bedroom…

1. Buy some falsies.

Screenshot 2020-02-19 at 20.23.35

Sick of forever smudging your nails or having to sit there unable to move for 3 hours to make sure they are really properly dry? This one is for you.

There are so many ready painted stick on nails you can get these days – just pop into Boots or Primark – or if you want to get a bit more creative, buy a big pack of plain ones and paint them yourself.

You can buy them in the shape you want and then cut or file them down to size. I use a nail art stand from Amazon and once I’ve got the nails to the right shape and size, paint them and let them dry before sticking them on. Voila, no smudging!

2. Gel polish

Screenshot 2020-02-19 at 20.15.57Want to keep your natural nails? No problem! This one is a bit more of an investment but worth it in the long run. You can get a full starter kit from Mylee for under £60 which includes the lamp, plus 4 gel polishes, gel polish remover and a top and base coat. Or if you want to be a bit more economical there are lamps on amazon for under £30.

Gel’s are great for avoiding the smudge problem but also will last up to 4 weeks if you take care of them properly.

3. Fun top coats

Screenshot 2020-02-19 at 20.16.16Want something a bit more out there than a plain colour but not the most creative? Never fear, the fun top coat is here! Using a fun top coat is an easy way to add more to your manicure. Use on all your nails or just one as an accent.

My personal favourites are the funfetti (No. 920 – pictured) and stars in your eyes (No. 477) from candy coat. To get the best out of these products I would recommend using a little paint brush to position the bigger pieces and spread them out to get your desired affect.

4. Glitter

Screenshot 2020-02-19 at 20.15.30Accent nails are another easy way to spice up your manicure. You can go simple and just do one whole glitter nail, or you can go all out and have all your nails glittery. I almost always end up adding some glitter to my nails, these are one of my favourite sets I have done. By doing a glitter ombre it means it isn’t too much for every day but it still has a good amount of sparkle!

To do an ombre you can either use a sponge or a specific paintbrush. There are loads of YouTube tutorials on this.

5. Go dotty

Screenshot 2020-02-19 at 19.48.27

Nail art can be quite daunting so start simple and add some dots for a cute look. You can get a set of dotting tools from Amazon for under £2. As you get braver you can experiment with different dot sizes, overlapping them, using multiple colours. The possibilities are endless, and so easy to do!

Lacking inspiration? Instagram is my go to. There are loads of nail accounts which you can look to for new ideas and patterns.

6. Cuticle oil and moisturiser

Want to get that post salon shine and glow? Pick up some cuticle oil and use post manicure or just on natural nails to keep your skin looking fresh. Oh, and don’t forget to moisturise – you don’t want to spend all that time making your nails look good to have dry hands!

Let me know if you try any of these!

I post all my nail pics over on instagram, find them here: @lottiedoesnails

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas

It’s December – and you know what that means? Its decorating time!

Since this will be the first Christmas in our flat, we had no decorations. On the one hand it’s a fresh slate to decorate how we want, on the other hand we have to buy things. So I have put my bargain hunting hat on and thought I would share how we decorated our home for under £40*.

Living room

IMG_7012This tree is great, especially if you have limited space. There is still plenty of tree to hang decorations on and drape lights around. As our living room is predominantly blue and cream we decided on a blue and silver theme for the tree. Primark had these great little silver and blue present decorations and we picked up a pack of 10 silver baubles from Tiger which helps fill the empty spaces. To add in a bit of variety we picked up three larger baubles from Neon Sheep as well.

In the hallway we have blue and silver Primark tinsel and fairy lights from Tiger – we would have bought them from Primark but they were out of stock.

We also picked up a Merry Christmas banner and a wreath for the table. If like me you have a plant obsession Poinsettia’s are great festive plants and are in most supermarkets at the moment. I picked up a ‘festive’ poinsettia which has had some glitter sprayed on it.

Bedroom

If like me you cannot resist and the Christmas decorating needs to spill over into every area of the house, Primark do some great festive bedding and cushions. Here are some of my personal favourites:

Have you decorated your home yet?

Items featured
Christmas tree – Tiger £15
Silver baubles– Tiger £2
Present baubles – Primark £3
Tinsel – Primark £1
Fairy lights– Tiger £1.50

Wreath – Tesco £5
Poinsettia – £5
Fairisle throw– Primark £18
Check throw – Primark £18
Duvet cover– Primark £11

*When I say £40 I haven’t included the bedroom stuff.

Autumn obsessions

The start of September means the start of a new season for fashion and I am SO EXCITED! Here are some of the trends I am looking forward to making the most of now that the weather has cooled down a bit:

1. Corduroy

This blazer co-ord from Nasty Gal is perfect for autumn, style them together or separately and the colour is perfect for the summer – autumn transition.

Personally I think a corduroy dress is a staple for autumn. It has the potential for so many layers – long sleeve tee underneath, snuggly jumper on top and a coat once it starts to get really chilly. H&M have some nice ones but this blue zip dress is another Nasty Gal find.

You can never go wrong with an oversized shirt and I particularly like the colour of this Pull&Bear one – giving me all the autumn feels!

2. Slouchy knits

I am a sucker for anything soft and warm so slouchy jumpers are my favourite thing about autumn. It’s always good to have a neutral coloured jumper on standby, particularly if you are a fan of bright colours and patterns (like me). I am loving all the jumpers in Fashion Influx’s In The Style collection but I especially like the slouchy jumper in beige and this roll neck jumper dress in white.

3. Jewel tones

Just because the weather might be turning grey doesn’t mean your wardrobe has to! Add a pop of colour to your outfit using your accessories – for example this belt from River Island. You can never go too far wrong with blue and this blue wrap blouse, also River Island, is perfect for those ‘jeans and nice top’ occasions. The pictures don’t do justice to the colour of this Nasty Gal polo neck, guaranteed to brighten up any autumn day.

What are your favourite autumn trends?

Stepping into Spring trends

As we approach the start of spring there are lots of new trends to try. Here is a round up of some of my favourites and the styles I’m looking forward to for Spring 2020.

Room revamp on a budget

I am one of those people that gets bored with my surroundings almost monthly – I love to change things up and revamp my bedroom. However completely changing the style of a room is expensive, so I have a few go to things that always make my room feel like new again.

  1. PLANTS

VdfPoNqESWGmRFg0hCU+8QNothing makes a room feel more fresh than a new green friend in the corner, or if you already have a few too many plants try repotting them. ASOS & H&M have some great little planters and they aren’t too expensive. A cheap way to buy a new plant is to get it from a super market as they often come with the pot included – and that’s normally the bit where I end up spending the most money – like this cute snake plant I picked up from Waitrose.

I also move the plants I already have around which has the affect of making the room feel a bit different.

2. REORGANISE YOUR BOOKSHELVES

Seems like a weird one but bare with me. Take all the things of your shelves and rearrange them. Find new places for things, maybe put your books in colour order or stack them in a new place. I don’t have a lot of books on my shelves – I don’t read particularly often – so mine have candles, jewellery boxes and picture frames on them. Switching these around is a super easy way to have a bit of a change without spending any money.

3. POSTERS & PRINTS

IMG_3654I love seeing how other people style their homes and I can hardly scroll through instagram without seeing prints from Desenio – is there a single influencer who hasn’t got a gallery wall in every room? So naturally whenever I am feeling like my room needs a bit of a spruce up my first thought is posters or prints – but that gets expensive real fast,  most prints are upwards of £10 and if you want a few then you get frames etc. its too much. Then I remembered Etsy. I found a great poster shop called The Poster Studio UK where you can get an A3 print for £7. Then I got the frames from Amazon and voila, way cheaper than the instagram brand of choice and just as stylish.

Better yet – design and print your own! If you have a bit of creative flair you could use use a combination of apps or if you’ve already seen something you like – for me I fancied a picture of the sea – just do a quick google.

4. MAGAZINES

fullsizeoutput_418c

I love a book with a beautiful instagram-able cover but I can’t fork out £15 every time I see a pretty book. Instead I get a magazine pack of 2, on this occasion I picked up Elle and  Bazaar. Also for all you instagrammers out there, perfect if you want to add elements to a flatlay.

Mainly I think these look cute on tables and add a bit of colour.

5. DECLUTTER

This seems like an obvious one, grab a box (or a bin bag depending on how ruthless you’re feeling) and start putting stuff away. Clear surfaces are bound to make you feel more relaxed and make your room feel fresh.

6. GO TO PRIMARK

Facetune_25-08-2019-20-42-20They have loads of great home-wear for dirt cheap, I picked up a super cute bedding set for £12. Easy way to make a room feel new is by switching up the colour scheme and in a bedroom the biggest source of colour is normally the bedding. Get some new cushions or a new throw in a different colour, it makes your bed feel brand new.

So there you have it. My favourite ways to revamp my room on a budget. What are your go to ways to make a room feel like new?

Handbag haul

I haven’t bought a new handbag in what feels like forever. I  am a girl who normally sticks to a backpack – they’re practical but not always the most fashionable I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to branch out and get something practical but also something a bit more adult and stylish.

I came across the brand Claudia Canova on ASOS, and I it is fast becoming my favourite brand! Their styles are so fun but also simple enough to go with everything, and they had some great deals in their end of season sale…

IMG_3069

I had my eye on this tote bag for a while and when it went on sale I had to order it! I don’t like a big black bag it just feels a bit to school bag like for me, so this khaki colour is perfect. It has this little inner bag that you can remove which is perfect for keeping all your stuff organised. Ever since I got it, it has been my go to bag everyday. I also picked up a new purse – also in the sale. I bought both of these direct from the Claudia Canova site, rather than through ASOS but it is worth checking both sites because they’re sometimes cheaper on ASOS and sometimes on sale on Claudia Canova.

Claudia Canova Tote Bag

Claudia Canova Purse

IMG_3067

I also needed to replace my little black bag – we all need one! One of the things I loved about this is that it’s a little bit different and adds more to the outfit. I also discovered that the strap is interchangeable so when I want this bag to feel like new again I can just get a new strap for this bag. I love the pink Claudia Canova lining – really gives it that luxury feel.

It has a zipped pocket on the back which is perfect for storing your phone and multiple pockets in the main section as well which is perfect. Such a bargain as well as it was in the ASOS sale down from £55 to £25!
