What I read in 2020

One of my goals for this year was to read more and due to certain world events (namely multiple lockdowns) I have had plenty of time to do just that! So here is a round up of all the books I read in 2020.

The Confessions of Frannie Langton
Sara Collins

Frannie Langton, a servant and former slave, stands accused of the brutal double murder of her employers, renowned scientist George Benham and his eccentric French wife, Marguerite. The testimonies against Frannie are damning but she claims that she can’t remember what happened that evening, even if it could save her life. She doesn’t know how she came to be covered in the victims’ blood. But she does have a tale to tell. The Confessions of Frannie Langton is a murder mystery that travels across the Atlantic from a childhood on a Jamaican plantation and her apprenticeship under a debauched scientist who stretched all bounds of ethics, through the events that brought her into the Benhams’ London home—and into a passionate and forbidden relationship.

I picked this one up because of the murder mystery element, but I found I forgot about the murder as the book took a different turn and was more about the struggles of a mixed race girl growing up in Jamaica and as a servant in a big fancy Georgian home. This is a good read if you are a fan of historical fiction and also enjoy an element of mystery.

My Sister, the Serial Killer
Oyinkan Braithwaite

When Korede is interrupted one night by a distress call from her sister, Ayoola, she immediately knows what’s expected of her. This’ll be the third boyfriend Ayoola’s dispatched in, quote, ‘self-defence’ and the third mess that her lethal little sibling has left Korede to clear away. She should probably go to the police for the good of the menfolk of Nigeria, but she loves her sister and, as they say, family always comes first. Until, that is, Ayoola starts dating the doctor where Korede works as a nurse. Korede’s long been in love with him, and isn’t prepared to see him meet the same fate as the three before him: but to save one would mean sacrificing the other.

I devoured My Sister, the Serial Killer in 3 days (which for me is extremely unusual!) and I would happily read it again and again. The short chapters make it feel as though you are reading really fast, and also mean it is very easy to say ‘I’ll just read one more’ particularly as I found the story so compelling! After reading this book I felt much more motivated to read and also had a sense of accomplishment for having read a book in such a short space of time.

I Have Sinned
Caimh McDonnell

I Have Sinned is book two in the McGarry Stateside series, a continuation of the Dublin Trilogy which also featured Bunny McGarry. Bunny McGarry (what a fantastically ridiculous name!) is a man on a mission. He left behind his life in Ireland to go to New York to find the woman he loves, who happens to have a lot of very dangerous people looking for her. The good news is that they don’t know where she is, the bad news is that Bunny doesn’t either and the only people that do are a rogue order of nuns called The Sisters of the Saint who are proving very difficult to find. Bunny’s one clue is a priest he thinks might know something, but Father Gabriel de Marcos isn’t willing to play ball. Thing is, priests don’t typically have assassins sent after them. Bunny has no choice but to save Gabriel from the demons that are on his tail.

As I had already read the previous books in this series, this one was a no brainer. Although frustratingly only available on Amazon, I think due to the author not being that well known, so I couldn’t find any of his books in my usual high street book shops. I would recommend this to you if you enjoy a crime thriller but want something a bit more light hearted – this genuinely did make me laugh out loud!

Where the Crawdads Sing
Delia Owens

For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted the quiet fishing village of Barkley Cove. Kya Clark is considered unfit for polite society, living on the marsh barefoot and wild. In late 1969, when the popular Chase Andrews is found dead, suspicion immediately falls on the weird girl from the marsh. But Kya is not what they say. With just one day of school, she takes life’s lessons from the land, learning the real ways of the world from the dishonest signals of fireflies. But while she has the skills to live in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world–until the unthinkable happens.

I think almost every one I know has read (or tried to read) Where the Crawdads Sing at some point in 2020. I didn’t feel like I really got into this one until about half way through, but once I got there I was hooked! The poetic prose of the first half are pretty hard to slog through, but a friend was reading it at the same time as me and was a bit ahead so kept encouraging me to stick with it and I am so glad she did because this is a great book!

Blood and Sugar
Laura Shepherd-Robinson

June, 1781. An unidentified body hangs upon a hook at Deptford Dock – horribly tortured and branded with a slaver’s mark. Days later, Captain Harry Corsham – a war hero embarking upon a promising parliamentary career – is visited by the sister of an old friend. Her brother, passionate abolitionist Tad Archer, had been about to expose a secret that he believed could cause irreparable damage to the British slaving industry. He’d said people were trying to kill him, and now he’s missing . To discover what happened to Tad, Harry is forced to pick up the threads of his friend’s investigation, delving into the heart of the conspiracy that he had unearthed. His investigation will threaten his political prospects, his family’s happiness, and force a reckoning with his past, risking the revelation of secrets that have the power to destroy him. And that is only if he can survive the mortal dangers awaiting him in Deptford.

Can you tell I like murder mysteries? I wasn’t expecting to like Blood and Sugar as much as I did, as normally historical fiction isn’t really my thing but I LOVED it! Laura Shepherd-Robinson’s next book is out in early 2021 and it is already on my to read list. If you are a murder mystery lover like me this is definitely the book for you!

VOX
Christina Dalcher

Set in an America where half the population has been silenced, VOX is the story of what one woman will do to protect herself and her daughter. On the day the government decrees that women are no longer allowed to speak more than 100 words daily, Dr. Jean McClellan is in denial—this can’t happen here. Not in America. Not to her. Soon women can no longer hold jobs. Girls are no longer taught to read or write. Females no longer have a voice. Before, the average person spoke sixteen thousand words a day, but now women only have one hundred to make themselves heard. For herself, her daughter, and every woman silenced, Jean will reclaim her voice.

Whilst I would recommend this book to other people, and the premise is really interesting, I don’t think it was executed as well as it could have been… Most of the book was setting the scene for the last few chapters where all the action happened. An interesting and thought-provoking read but definitely not one I will be reaching for again. After hearing such good things, VOX left me feeling a bit… meh.

Normal People
Sally Rooney

At school Connell and Marianne pretend not to know each other. He’s popular and well-adjusted, star of the school soccer team while she is lonely, proud, and intensely private. But when Connell comes to pick his mother up from her housekeeping job at Marianne’s house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers – one they are determined to conceal. A year later, they’re both studying at Trinity College in Dublin. Marianne has found her feet in a new social world while Connell hangs at the sidelines, shy and uncertain. Throughout their years in college, Marianne and Connell circle one another, straying toward other people and possibilities but always magnetically, irresistibly drawn back together. Then, as she veers into self-destruction and he begins to search for meaning elsewhere, each must confront how far they are willing to go to save the other.

Another book that everyone seems to have read, and it’s easy to see why. I read Normal People over one of the bank holiday weekends and I just couldn’t put it down. Such a wonderful read! I haven’t yet watched the BBC adaptation that came out this year as often these things don’t live up to the books, but it is on the list. I don’t often cry at books but this almost got me, it is quite a tragic tale.

Dark Sacred Night
Micheal Connelly

Renée Ballard is working the night beat again, and returns to Hollywood Station in the early hours only to find a stranger rifling through old file cabinets. The intruder is retired detective Harry Bosch, working a cold case that has gotten under his skin. Ballard kicks him out, but then checks into the case herself and it brings a deep tug of empathy and anger. Bosch is investigating the death of fifteen-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway on the streets of Hollywood who was brutally murdered and her body left in a dumpster like so much trash. Now, Ballard joins forces with Bosch to find out what happened to Daisy and finally bring her killer to justice.

I love the Bosch TV series on Amazon and have since started reading the books. They don’t disappoint! Perfect if you love a crime thriller or police drama. Dark Sacred Night is the second in the Renée Ballard series and the 21st in the Harry Bosch series but you don’t need to have read the previous books to be able to follow the story. I know I can pick up any book by Micheal Connelly and that I will enjoy reading it – making them the perfect books for when I have hit a bit of a reading slump.

Queenie
Candice Carty-Williams

Queenie Jenkins is a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in London, straddling two cultures and slotting neatly into neither. She works at a national newspaper, where she’s constantly forced to compare herself to her white middle class peers. After a messy break up from her long-term white boyfriend, Queenie seeks comfort in all the wrong places…including several hazardous men who do a good job of occupying brain space and a bad job of affirming self-worth. As Queenie careens from one questionable decision to another, she finds herself wondering, “What are you doing? Why are you doing it? Who do you want to be?”—all of the questions today’s woman must face in a world trying to answer them for her.

I could have read about Queenie’s life forever and ever! Queenie was on a lot of reading lists this year that were being shared at the time of the Black Lives Matter protests as an essential read to learn more about Black British culture in a way that is rarely represented in mainstream fiction. Whilst that is true I also think Queenie is a very relatable character for any woman in her early 20’s and would recommend this book to everyone!

The Trouble with Goats and Sheep
Joanna Cannon

England, 1976. Mrs. Creasy is missing and the Avenue is alive with whispers. The neighbors blame her sudden disappearance on the heat wave, but ten-year-olds Grace and Tilly aren’t convinced. As the summer shimmers endlessly on, the girls decide to take matters into their own hands. Inspired by the local vicar, they go looking for God—they believe that if they find Him they might also find Mrs. Creasy and bring her home. Grace and Tilly go door to door in search of clues. The cul-de-sac starts to give up its secrets, and the amateur detectives uncover much more than ever imagined. As they try to make sense of what they’ve seen and heard, a complicated history of deception begins to emerge. Everyone on the Avenue has something to hide, a reason for not fitting in. In the suffocating heat of the summer, the ability to guard these differences becomes impossible. Along with the parched lawns and the melting pavement, the lives of all the neighbors begin to unravel.

The Trouble with Goats and Sheep was given to me as a gift and I really enjoyed it! It’s not the sort of thing I would normally read but this was gorgeous! I particularly liked how most of the book is told from the perspective of an 11 year old, which put a different spin on the story. I don’t feel this is a particularly well known book as most people I talk to about it haven’t come across it, but it should be. Again I would recommend this to everyone!

The Final Game
Caimh McDonnell

Dorothy Graham is dead. This is hugely inconvenient, not least for her. Luckily, she has planned for this eventuality. Now, if any of her truly dreadful family want to get their hands on her money, they will have to do so via a fiendishly difficult and frankly bizarre competition of Dorothy’s devising. Just because you’re dead, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a last laugh at the expense of people who made your life miserable. Paul Mulchrone, to his unending credit, is neither related to Dorothy nor happy that she is dead. What he is, however, is a contestant in this competition whether he likes it or not, which he definitely doesn’t. He and his girlfriend, the formidable Brigit, are supposed to be running MCM Investigations, a detective agency. Instead, they have to go into battle against Dorothy’s bloodsucking relatives. As if that wasn’t enough, they get hired by the aforementioned dead woman to find out who killed her.

Another cracker from Caimh McDonnell. I find his books so easy to read and so enjoyable. The Final Game follows on from the Dublin Trilogy and is just as amusing. Although I would say that this is slightly more ridiculous that the McGarry Stateside series, it’s still a book I would recommend to crime fiction lovers.

So there you have it, all the books I read in 2020. If you haven’t read any of these I hope this offers you some inspiration for your next book and if you have read them what did you think? Maybe you hated a book I loved! What was the best book you read this year?

Travel tips: Packing made easy

Heading on holiday? Packing can be stressful, particularly if like me you have a tendency to overpack. Not to mention the struggle of getting it to all fit back in your suitcase for the return trip! Here are a few life hacks that I use to make packing that little bit easier.

Plan your wardrobe

Smart closetThis is the easiest way to avoid over or under packing. Instead of picking random items out of your wardrobe try to pack outfits instead. This will save you from feeling like you have nothing to wear when you get to where your going! To plan my outfits I like to use the Smart Closet app. Although it takes a while to upload your wardrobe it is so worth it to be able to browse your clothes directly from your phone. You can even create a packing list for your holiday so that when it comes to transferring clothes to suitcase you don’t miss anything!

Keep it organised

Packing cubesWant to maximise your space and keep everything organised, packing cubes are your friend! These are an essential if you are going to make multiple stops as it saves you having to unpack and repack as you can just leave everything in the cubes. You can get them in loads of different sizes and colours, personally I wanted something that looked a bit more stylish so shopped around and found these from Nordace. Not only do they look super cute but they are also compression cubes so they shrink down making them even more space efficient.

Accessorise with ease

f35dbb12-7b93-48e3-bfe5-20c658decb94One of my biggest bugbears when travelling is tangled jewellery. I used to spend hours de-tangling my necklaces but my Stackers jewellery box has been a major game changer! You can get a variety of sizes but I find the medium one is perfect for me. Not only does it keep everything organised for the journey, its also a great way to keep everything organised while you’re on your trip and minimise the chances of a misplaced necklace or a lost earring.

What do you use to make your life easier when it comes to holiday packing?

Autumn obsessions

The start of September means the start of a new season for fashion and I am SO EXCITED! Here are some of the trends I am looking forward to making the most of now that the weather has cooled down a bit:

1. Corduroy

This blazer co-ord from Nasty Gal is perfect for autumn, style them together or separately and the colour is perfect for the summer – autumn transition.

Personally I think a corduroy dress is a staple for autumn. It has the potential for so many layers – long sleeve tee underneath, snuggly jumper on top and a coat once it starts to get really chilly. H&M have some nice ones but this blue zip dress is another Nasty Gal find.

You can never go wrong with an oversized shirt and I particularly like the colour of this Pull&Bear one – giving me all the autumn feels!

2. Slouchy knits

I am a sucker for anything soft and warm so slouchy jumpers are my favourite thing about autumn. It’s always good to have a neutral coloured jumper on standby, particularly if you are a fan of bright colours and patterns (like me). I am loving all the jumpers in Fashion Influx’s In The Style collection but I especially like the slouchy jumper in beige and this roll neck jumper dress in white.

3. Jewel tones

Just because the weather might be turning grey doesn’t mean your wardrobe has to! Add a pop of colour to your outfit using your accessories – for example this belt from River Island. You can never go too far wrong with blue and this blue wrap blouse, also River Island, is perfect for those ‘jeans and nice top’ occasions. The pictures don’t do justice to the colour of this Nasty Gal polo neck, guaranteed to brighten up any autumn day.

What are your favourite autumn trends?

  1. the high lowThe weekly pop culture and current affairs podcast ‘The High Low’ covers a range of stories as well as recommendations hosted by Dolly Alderton and Pandora Sykes. The week unwrapped

  2. Every Friday Olly Mann is joined by three members of The Week’s digital team to talk about the stories that didn’t get the attention they deserve for ‘The Week Unwrapped’. News can often be very depressing but they keep the discussion light and interesting.Listen to The Week Unwrapped

  4. Another news podcast that I enjoy is ‘Today in Focus’ from The Guardian. This one is a daily podcast which means they can cover each topic in lots of detail and you have something to listen to everyday.Listen to Today in Focus
  5. SerialSerial’ and ‘S-Town’, both produced by This American Life, are real stories toldweek by week. S-Town is only one season but it is a great story taking you on all sorts of twists and turns. Serial has 3 series each covering a different story.Listen to Serial

April favourites

It’s been ages since I did a monthly faves so here is a round up of my loves and favourites from April.

Why everyone should read Naomi Alderman’s book ‘The Power’

Naomi Alderman’s 2016 novel “The Power” explores what a world where women are the dominant gender might look like. The book begins when women develop the ability to release electrical jolts from their fingers and then follows how they use their new found power to take over the world. The book follows four main characters (Margot, Roxy, Allie and Tunde) as they adjust to their new reality.

This book is such an interesting concept that is so much more than just ‘What if women ruled the world?’ It is an exploration of the power dynamics between men and women and an exploration of how our ‘civil’ society could descend so quickly into anarchy.

I can’t express enough how amazing this book is so here are 5 reasons why you must read ‘The Power”

  1. Feminism – this is an obvious one, after all this book is marketed as ‘one of those essential feminist works’
  2. It’s so thought provoking – imagine the GSCE English essays you could write on the themes in this book! Much more interesting than ‘of mice and men’ and Curly’s wife with her red nails, red dress, red everything and what that might represent. Seriously though it really gave my brain a workout.
  3. If you are a women this book is so relatable – not in the whole being able to shoot lightning from your fingers thing obviously, but the way Alderman presents men and their behaviour towards women in this book. It particularly shines a light on how far we still have to go to get to a place of gender equality.
  4. If you are a man I think this book should be required reading – I think that the role reversal presented by this book where men are the homemakers and women are the breadwinners presents men with an easier way to put themselves in a women’s shoes (as it were) and how it would be if men rather than women had to live in constant fear for their physical safety.
  5. GIRL POWER! Seriously this book left me feeling so empowered.

This book is quite a heavy read, exploring religion, rape culture and more. At times women are presented in a very unflattering way but I think that’s what makes this book so brilliant! It makes the book feel much more believable and is a fascinating look at human behaviour. I can see why this won the 2017 Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction.

If this review hasn’t sold you on this book then I highly recommend you go and read some of the reviews here. There are some really great ones, as well as some great Q&A’s.

What I read in 2020

One of my resolutions for 2020 was to read more, I set myself a goal of 10 books over the year and I have succeeded! So here is a round up of everything I read.

Shreddy Resistance Bands Review

Recently I have been really bad at getting to the gym, a lot of things have changed for me and so fitness has taken a bit of a back seat. Anyway in an attempt to get back into the swing of things (and minimise possible excuses) I thought I would invest in some decent resistance bands. My old ones are too thin and dig in to my legs whenever I use them, so I don’t really reach for them. I have heard really good things about Grace’s resistance bands so I thought I would give them a try.

Facetune_30-09-2018-17-28-29
So I picked up the light (blue) and the heavy (peach) bands (the medium was sold out) and for 2 bands I paid £25 a single band was £14* (I think). I ordered these late on Wednesday and they got to me by Saturday morning which is pretty fast I think. They come in a resealable plastic pouch which is nice if you want to store them properly but honestly I can’t be bothered with that!

All of Grace’s products come with a selection of workouts or to use the proper name “Booty Burners” which you can access on an app called Aflete or you can download the PDF emailed to you when you make your purchase. There are several different styles of workout:
Resistance Band Glute Activation
Non-Resistance Band Glute Activation
Resistance Band Glute Burnouts
Non-Resistance Band Glute Burnouts
Home Glute Workouts – these consist of exercises with and without resistance bands.

In order to do a proper review I thought I would use the bands to complete a variety of the Booty Burners. So today I did a Resistance Band Glute Activation workout followed by a Home Glute Workout and finished off with a Resistance Band Glute Burnout. I decided to use the light band because its been a while since I exercised so my strength isn’t as good as it was.

Did I feel the burn? HELL YES!

I honestly don’t think I will be able to sit down comfortably tomorrow! I really liked the workouts as they’re all quite short so if you haven’t got a lot of time these are perfect. Also they’re all body weight exercises so perfect when the gym is busy and there isn’t any equipment available. The app is super easy to use and I like how easy it makes accessing the workouts.

Are they worth the money? They are very good quality and I understand that they have to make a profit so I would say they are worth the money. I would definitely buy a bundle rather than a one off product though to get better value for money.

Would I recommend these? Yes, I was afraid that they were over hyped just because of the name on them but they are definitely as good as everyone says they are. I like that you get workouts with them which definitely helps if you need a bit of inspiration or are a complete beginner. They are also really pretty, the colours are so cute and the little logo is a really nice touch.

These are currently sold out but I believe they are restocking soon

Buy them here

* I bought these when they were first released under the Grace Fit UK brand, they have since become B_ND and now fall under the Shreddy umbrella. Prices were correct at time of writing in 2018 but may have since changed.

FlexxFit: A Review

When you own five pairs of leggings from the same brand you know it’s time for a review…

Drugstore Makeup Haul

Where to start! I’ve got a fair amount to get through so I’m just gonna jump right in! I’ll group things by brand and link it all at the bottom.

Lottie London

I used to get all my makeup brushes from Lottie London so now that they’re rolling out lots of makeup I have been wanting to try a selection of their stuff. Firstly their packaging is super cute, I really like the metallic logo and product names on the liquid lipstick and eye foils, definitely the sort of thing you want to display on your makeup table (or desk in my case).

IMG_4598Blush Crush – £4.95

Blush crush comes in 6 shades all named after celebrities: Justin, Zayn, Zac, Drake, Nick and Harry

I couldn’t decide between the shades Zayn and Justin as they both looked quite peachy and I like a peachy blush. In the end I chose the shade Zayn.

These are SO pigmented, seriously, INSANELY pigmented!

You only need a small amount of product to add colour to your cheeks. The mirror is a really good size as well which is definitely a selling point.

Is it worth the money? Definitely, for a cheap drugstore blusher its a really nice formula and has great pigmentation. If anything its a little too pigmented which makes it hard to work with, you need to blend… A LOT so that you don’t look like crazy

Would I buy it again? Probably although I don’t think I will need to for a really long time given how little product you need to get the desired affect.

FacetuneGlitter Switch liquid lipstick – £6.95

I have to say I mainly picked this up because I was intrigued by the idea of “Glitter Switch” but also this coral colour was calling my name! The idea is that once the lipstick is dry you can press your lips together to reveal glitter lips.

This one comes in 4 shades Wanted, High Roller, Dream on and Killin’ it. I’ve picked up High Roller.

It has a slim doe foot applicator, which isn’t the easiest to use. The colour is gorgeous and the glitter switch is really cool. Although not really an everyday sort of thing, maybe for more of a festival or night time look.

In terms of staying power… it is extremely long lasting! The swatch I did on my hand in Superdrug took a lot of scrubbing to remove.

Worth the money? £7 is not a huge amount to pay for a liquid lipstick and it is definitely worth it.

Would I buy it again? Yes yes yes, I want this in every colour! The staying power alone is enough to convince me.

IMG_4611Eye Foil metallic eyeshadow topper – £4.95

So this only comes in four shades denied, faded, fire and savage. I couldn’t choose just one so I picked up 2 of them… fire and savage.

I find it a little odd that they decided to call a blue shade fire because it makes me think of warm tones and oranges and reds not blue. Either way this shade is stunning! As is the pink shade, savage. Although on the eye its not as pink as it is in the bottle.

I haven’t had the chance to use the blue shade yet, its not the most versatile colour as I only see it working with blue or purple eye looks. I have used the pink shade though, and it makes a poppin’ inner corner highlight as well as looking good all over the lid.

Worth the money? Yes, I’ve seen other people call it a dupe for the stila magnificent metals (which is much more expensive)

Would I buy it again? Yes, although as a person who rarely wears bold eye looks I’m probably wouldn’t buy the blue one again because as much as I love it, I just don’t see myself using it enough.

Bourjois

Facetune 3Healthy mix Anti-Fatigue Concealer – £9

My current holy grail, I cannot live without this!

It claims to be medium coverage but I think it’s more like full coverage which makes it perfect for covering up dark circles. I picked up the shade 53 because I have the foundation equivalent of this in the same shade.

I really like the formula of this and it smells sort of fruity like the foundation. They also blend really nicely together.

Worth the money? It’s not the cheapest concealer but honestly it’s so good I don’t mind paying a bit more for it. I will probably wait for a 3 for 2 deal though…

Would I buy it again? Yes yes yes and YES!

IMG_4618Volume Clubbing Mascara – £7.99

I have to say this is the first mascara I’ve owned that isn’t a plastic brush, and I really like it! It gives a much more natural look while still adding volume and length. It’s my go to everyday mascara now.

I probably wouldn’t choose to wear it with a full face of makeup (bold eyes, bold lips, the works) but its perfect for natural makeup.

Worth the money? £7.99 is not a lot to pay for mascara and the brush is so nice, it could easily be more than that.

Would I buy it again? Probably although I’ve had better mascaras, but for a subtle look this is the perfect mascara.

IMG_4593Le Petit Strober – £6.49

I only picked up this highlighter because it was free (it was a spend £12 get a free highlighter deal) and I am really glad I didn’t pay for it…

It looks like such a stunning colour but it is so hard to get any pigmentation! Which is super annoying, however if you are after a more subtle everyday glow then this is the highlighter for you. After all we can’t all wonder round looking like glazed donuts now can we!

It comes with a little brush which to be honest isn’t very useful, and more than anything just gets in the way.

Worth the money? No, I’ve had £5 highlighters that are 1000 times better than this one.

Would I buy it again? No, I doubt I’ll even use it that much to be honest.

Nyx

IMG_4607Honey Dew Me Up Primer – £15

I have wanted to try this for SO LONG! I’ve put it off for ages but I couldn’t resist any longer.

It smells amazing, and it really does remind me of honey with its colour and sparkles suspended in it.

The little plastic spatula style applicator is a bit odd but I found it means I don’t apply too much. When I first put it on it felt a bit oily but it soon sunk in and became more tacky feeling.

Worth the money? Personally I don’t think I can be dropping £15 on primer all the time, but this is a really nice primer. It has a really lux feel to it.

Would I buy it again? Definitely!

IMG_4613Soft Matte Metallic Lip Cream – £6

So I actually thought I had picked up the non-metallic version of this and was a bit annoyed at myself when I realised I in fact picked up the metallic version. This is the shade Copenhagen.

I have the soft matte lip cream in the shade London  and really like the formula so thought I would try another colour. Despite it being metallic I actually love this colour! It isn’t to shiny or sparkly which is a relief and means its actually quite wearable. I also picked up the matching suede matte lip liner (also in the shade Copenhagen – £4) and the suede matte lip liner to match my other lip cream (London). The lip liners apply really nicely so I’m glad I got them. Never underestimate the importance of a good lip liner!

Worth the money? It’s quite a small tube for £6 but it is a nice formula. Nyx is a little bit more expensive than other “drug store” brands so I would expect to pay a bit more for anything from them. I suppose it is worth the money.

Would I buy it again? Yes but in the matte version not metallic, I am a much bigger fan of matte lipsticks.

IMG_4617Contour Powder – £3.50

I needed a replacement contour powder, and I didn’t want to splash out on a whole palette so when I saw that Nyx sold these little single powders I picked one up. I went for the shade Sienna which is described as “matte light brown with pink undertones”. I tried to pick a cool shade, but I didn’t want to go too cool because it can look grey.

Worth the money? I think so, it’s cheaper than buying a huge palette and only using one colour. There are also so many shades to choose from so you could definitely find the shade that’s right for you.

Would I buy it again? Definitely, depending on how I like the shade, I might choose a cooler or warmer toned powder.

Rimmel London

IMG_4620Scandaleyes Wow Wings Mascara – £6.99

Firstly the packaging is super cute, I am a sucker for anything with a holographic logo!

IMG_4621

I bought this because I was intrigued by the wand more than anything. One side is like a normal styled wand, the other side is shaped like a wing.

When I first started using this I have to say I found it really hard to use, it made my lashes so clumpy! Now that its been used a little bit and has started drying out slightly it’s much easier to use and I like it a lot better.

Worth the money? £7 isn’t a lot to pay for a mascara so I would say definitely.

Would I buy it again? Yes, but I wouldn’t wait for my old one to run out fully because it takes a while to get to a point where it is actually usable.

Revolution

Facetune_08-09-2018-22-56-51Conceal and Define Concealer – £4

Hailed as the must have dupe for Tarte Shape Tape I had to try this!

It comes in LOADS of shades, I picked up the shade C8 which is perfect for me at the moment post summer while I still have a tan, I think I’ll need a lighter shade for the winter. Also it’s worth knowing that the shade does change slightly when its applied as it oxidises quite quickly.

The doe foot applicator is a quite big, which is nice and makes it feel a bit more expensive.

Worth the money? Hell yea! £4 is so good for such a nice concealer and they now do a supersize version for £7!

Would I buy it again? I would, and I would probably pick up the bigger bottle as well!

And that concludes my (massive) drug store make up haul!

What make up should I try next? Leave me a comment if you have any good drug store make up suggestions or products you think I should try and let me know if you want more hauls (make up or otherwise)

Top tips for gym newbies

New Years resolutions. We all make them and at some point or another one of those resolutions will probably be to join a gym or to eat healthy. Realistically most people don’t keep their resolutions and give up on them by the middle of January. So I thought what better post to write than some things that helped me when I made the same resolution this time last year.

  1. Shop around – don’t just join the first gym you find! Lots of gyms do free trials so you can decide if it is going to work for you. Picking a gym that’s convenient and easy to get to is a great idea for those times when you can’t really be bothered. Pick a gym thats close to work/uni or on your way home and take your gym stuff with you.
  2. Organise a gym induction – this will make you feel more comfortable when you go on your own.
  3. Plan your workout – so you don’t feel like a lost and headless chicken wondering around when you get there. It also gives you the opportunity to look up how to do exercises properly. There are so many free workouts out there which brings me to my next point…
  4. Follow a couple of motivational accounts on Instagram – great for workout ideas and keeping you motivated! A quick search for workouts will give you lots and lots of videos and posts with workouts you can do
  5. Invest in a couple of cute gym outfits – the saying look good feel good really does apply! You don’t have to break the bank, take advantage of the January sales or places like primark do cute gym wear for cheap.
  6. Get a gym buddy – not always possible but definitely motivational! When I joined the gym I joined with my housemate and for at least the first month we went together until I felt comfortable to go on my own

And if getting healthy is your goal….

  1. Drink lots of water – make it a target to drink more it will make a huge difference to how you feel and is a nice easy starting point to ease yourself in!
  2. You don’t need to eat chicken and veg for every meal! Mix it up, pick up a healthy recipe book and aim to make a couple of meals from this a week
  3. Download an app to help keep track of calories – one of the biggest issues people have is eating portions that are too big, tracking calories is an easy way to stay on track BUT don’t restrict yourself! If you want that chocolate bar then you eat that chocolate bar.

And finally….

DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP IF YOU “FALL OFF THE WAGON!” If you miss one workout or have that takeaway you said you wouldn’t don’t just give up. Life gets in the way and its important to enjoy life! You don’t have to be healthy all day everyday to make progress or feel better in yourself. Just keep at it and remember to enjoy yourself.

The gym should be enjoyed and shouldn’t feel like a chore. If it does you are way less likely to stick to it!

Happy New Year and best of luck sticking to your resolutions whatever they may be!

Healthy on Holiday

When you are trying to lose fat or are trying to eat healthily holidays become a bit difficult. While you want to enjoy yourself you also don’t want to let your habits slip or lose any progress you might have made. The reality is that one week of eating “badly” is not going to have a lasting impact. That being said you can still do little things to make a difference. I went on holiday with every intention of eating super healthy and going to the gym at the hotel loads…when I got there however this didn’t really happen.

I started the holiday super healthy – fruit and veg being the main component of every meal – and I ended the holiday with the majority of my plate being deep-fried food.

This post is a sort of food diary with a few things I found helped me to stay on track while still enjoying myself.

DAY 1

IMG_0042

Up at 3:00am (ouch) at the airport by 4:30am breakfast at 5. I do not cope well with early starts, who does! If I don’t eat within a certain amount of time after I get up I feel really sick and if I am travelling will be sick so it was really important that I had breakfast. So we went into wetherspoons. Now I know what you’re thinking ‘spoons is not the healthiest BUT they did this delicious granola with berries and yoghurt.

We got to the hotel around midday which only meant one thing… LUNCH! The hotel wewere staying in ran an all-inclusive buffet for lunch as well as for breakfast and dinner. For my first lunch I had a salad with some salami, chargrilled veg, cheese and afocaccia style olive bread roll followed by chocolate cake with strawberries.

IMG_0043IMG_0044

After a lazy afternoon by the pool before dinner I decided to investigate the gym. Obviously the main attraction for people for this sort of holiday is not to spends hours in the gym so it was only a little one. A couple of treadmills a bike and a few strength machines as well as a selection of dumbbells is not a lot to choose from. That being said you can still get a killer workout just using dumbbells. After a short upper body session it was back to the room to get ready for dinner.

IMG_0045

Dinner was a bit random. I just picked up a little bit of everything that I fancied. Spring rolls, scampi, a prawn, paella and carrots. Then dessert. Apple tart and pineapple. For every meal during the holiday I had some sort of fruit for dessert. My way of convincing myself I was being ever so slightly healthy.

DAY 2

First experience of the breakfast. Naturally I had to try lots of different bits. So I started with a plate of fruit (there I go being healthy again) and followed it up with a couple of pancakes with strawberry sauce and a chocolate muffin (bye bye healthy).

IMG_0047IMG_0048

IMG_0049

Lazing around all day by the pool is such hard work I had to reward myself with lunch. Seafood paella – which apparently needed translating to fish rice – and focaccia. I didn’t have any dessert this time because I wasn’t too hungry. Not only did I only have one plate of food but after a lazy afternoon I went to the gym again! This time to do a lower body workout. Again I just used dumbbells but I was still stiff the next day.

IMG_0050

Dinner consisted of fish, chargrilled veg and deep-fried cauliflower. Now I know what you’re thinking deep fried cauliflower sounds weird but honestly it was delicious even if it’s not particularly good for you. Although I didn’t photograph it I followed this up with a bowl of fruit (and maybe some cake I can’t remember…so there was probably cake).

DAY 3

IMG_0051

Given that I ate pretty much the same thing for breakfast every day I didn’t think it would be worth boring you with photos of the same thing constantly so we will move straight on to lunch. Another plate of fish with vegetables but also focaccia and the deep-fried cauliflower. The main issue I had with the buffet was the lack of vegetable options. There were plenty of meat, fish and potato based things but there was only ever one or two vegetable choices which made life a bit tricky.

The hotel ran a variety of activities during the day to keep everyone entertained and in an attempt to get people up and moving and in the afternoon there was a game of water-polo which I joined in with. Not the most active game of water-polo but it did at least get me off my sun bed and doing something different.

IMG_0052

For dinner I helped myself to half a plate of mixed veg which mostly consisted of carrots  with deep-fried cauliflower (I had a lot of deep fried cauliflower this holiday ok it was soooo yummy) marinated pork and cheese. Again I’m sure there was a plate of cake and fruit after this but I was starting to forget to photograph things…

DAY 4

Same breakfast as usual. Lunch was probably paella and who knows what I had for dinner. I didn’t document any of my food all day, but there is more to life than photographing every scrap of food I eat. I did however try the aqua gym class…and I never did it again. Wasn’t really my thing and didn’t really feel like I was exercising but again I suppose it got me up and moving for an hour when other wise I probably wouldn’t have.

DAY 5

IMG_0056

Again useless with documenting food but I did manage to capture my dinner. A healthy balance of chicken nuggets, fried squid, chargrilled veg and potatoes. A random selection but buffets always are!

After dinner we went for a walk down to the beach so that was my activity for the day!

DAY 6

IMG_0061Got up nice and early and headed to the beach for the morning, which made a nice change from lying beside the pool. The water was such a gorgeous colour and lovely and warm. Naturally we had to be back in time for lunch (couldn’t miss that all-inclusive buffet) so then spent the afternoon by the pool – shock. To add a bit of variety instead of having dinner at the hotel we went into the town and had dinner at “The Travellers Inn”. I had a mahoosive pizza and a Pina colada that came with sparklers and a straw too long to drink out of in a cup with a funny face on.

DAY 7

IMG_0063

Our last day. Mixed it up and went for a cooked breakfast. Instantly regretted it. Bacon was too soggy so I went back and got my usual plate of fruit. For lunch I had chips and green beans with some sort of meat (again I can’t remember what it was – my memory is truly appalling) with lots and lots of mayo. I put all that mayo to  good use in the gym later and did myself a little upper body session.

IMG_0064

For dinner I had Paella, chargrilled veg, a veggie spring roll and some calamari. Calamari is one of my most favourite foods. When I was little it was all I would eat if we went on holiday. I still will always pick it if it is on the menu. We had to get up so early the next day that breakfast wasn’t on. So I had a large Burger King when we got to the airport… epitome of health amirite. Then it was back home and back to normal life.

HOW TO HOLIDAY HEALTHILY

So what did I do to avoid being super unhealthy. One week was never going to seriously hinder me but I wanted to make an effort to not go too off track. I aimed to eat at least one portion of fruit and veg with every meal and to get up and do something active every day. As you can tell from my food diary some days were healthier and better than others but I didn’t want to stop myself from having a good time or be worrying about it constantly. Overall by the end of my holiday I felt a bit fluffier but didn’t feel significantly larger and none of my clothes felt too tight. So I would call it a success.
